We work on the local, regional and international levels to promote and defend human rights. This work includes organisation of conferences and seminars and participation in research projects, publication of documents, and educational efforts concerning human rights.

Of particular importance is our ongoing contact with other organisations and participation in international campaigns in solidarity with the victims of violations of human rights.

We regularly sponsor events relating to different human rights themes, often in cooperation with other local and regional organisations. Our goal is to promote public awareness of the importance of continuing work in the area of human rights.

The Nuremberg Human Rights Center (NMRZ) is an active member of the nationwide cooperative efforts Forum for Human Rights, Coalition for an International Criminal Court, and the Coalition against Impunity.

Nuremberg: A symbol against the violation of human rights

The Nuremberg Trials of the principle Nazi war criminals is an important point of reference for human rights defenders throughout the world, and the name Nuremberg continues to be closely linked with these tribunals. Our location in Nuremberg constantly reminds us of the importance of coming to terms with the past and challenges us to promote accountability rather than impunity for violation of human rights.

Impunity

Impunity is one of the biggest obstacles in the struggle for human rights in the world today. The NMRZ has always been involved in efforts to end impunity, in particular fighting for justice for the victims of the military dictators in Latin America. Since March 1998 the NMRZ has served as the headquarters for the “Coalition Against Impunity – Truth and Justice for the German Disappeared in Argentina“, a network of 15 German NGOs working to ascertain the fate of the German victims of the dictatorship in Argentina and to prosecute those responsible.

Human rights in Latin America

The Nuremberg Human Rights Center is also responsible for the Center of Documentation and Information about Human Rights in Latin America.

The Center for Documentation and Information about Human Rights in Latin America (DIML) contains an extensive collection of magazines, books and other documents concerning human rights in general and human rights work in Latin America in particular, which are all available to the public. In our documentation center, there are approximately 300 magazines from nearly every Latin American country, as well as a special library consisting of 500 books and numerous other documents.

Access to these materials is free, and we can also provide assistance with requests for research and questions from individuals outside of the Nuremberg area. A small fee is charged for this assistance. We recommend that requestors formulate their questions as precisely as possible so that we can better assist with finding the most helpful information.

Publications

To maintain an ongoing exchange of ideas and information with Latin American human rights organisations, the DIML annually publishes the magazine “Memoria”. We also occasionally publish our own research results, but prefer to utilise existing media to publish information about our work concerning human rights in Latin America.

Human Rights Education

In Latin America, there is widespread teaching of human rights outside of the schools. One of our goals is to emphasise the fundamental, inalienable nature of human rights through our educational efforts in German schools.

The NMRZ has also co-developed the “The Street of Human Rights” program, and has compiled a packet of materials on the teaching of human rights. This educational kit contains basic items for teaching human rights, including a general introduction and information on various specific topics. This kit can be borrowed from the Nuremberg Human Rights Center and from other locations (please call for more information).

For a fee, a binder with materials about human rights education with examples fur different age levels is also available. We offer further literature and didactic materials about human rights and children rights which are listed in our catalogue (please request or download from the Internet).

Volunteers/Internships

The NMRZ and the DIML are mainly supported by the volunteer work of our members. We welcome individuals interested in volunteering, either within the existing framework of the Center or through the creation of new working areas. It is also possible to perform an unpaid internship at the NMRZ. The ability to work independently within the scope of a project agreed upon by the Center‘s directors is a prerequisite.
